The eastern portion of Sri Lanka is one of the areas which was most devastated by the 2004 tsunami. Unfortunately, it is far from receiving the most help. On the contrary, Galle in the south has benefited more aid owing to greater media coverage. Because of this, the eastern areas of Sri Lanka remain in desperate need of food and aid, lagging behind in recovery.
Despite the efforts of many organisations, many Sri Lankans continue a bleak life without proper shelter or access to food supplies. Almost 4 years have passed since the terrifying day where the sea devastated the land, and yet for many, life still has yet to recover from that day.
In photography, every picture grain counts. This is even more significant for thousands of homeless Sri Lankans beset by unemployment, homelessness and the ever increasing price of rice. This problem cannot be solved instantly, but like the rice we seek to distribute, you can help slowly heal this wound, grain by grain.
Initiated by a group of passion-driven artists from theredtree, with Canon as the main sponsor, this photo essay contest is the first of many grains to slowly roll in place. It gives the chance for ordinary photographers like you to be part of an effort to bring hope to those with very little. As frozen moments in time, photos have a power to enrich and impact lives. This competition is hence the beginning of our efforts to alert people to a problem that can all too easily be forgotten.
